Easy Step by Step How to Draw a Flower
Last Updated on September 18, 2021 by
Learning how to draw flowers can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know where to start. The good news is, you do not need to have years of art experience under your belt, as long as you have the right guide.
Step-by-step tutorials break everything down in a way that is easy for a beginner artist to understand, and that's what I have here for you! This flower drawing guide will show you exactly how you can create beautiful cartoon flowers that'll make you feel like a fancy artist in no time.
Before we get started, don't forget to grab some quality drawing pencils, a sketching pad, and erasers. These basic drawing supplies will help you get the most out of your flower drawing experience.
How to Draw Simple Flowers in a Pot
Our flower tutorial today is going to be of a simple sunflower-one of my personal favorites! This cute little sunflower will be rooted in an orange pot. This drawing is quick and easy and should take you under ten minutes to complete.
Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to draw flowers in a pot in just a minute.
To follow along with the tutorial, use the blue lines as a reference for the step you are on. For example, starting at step two, you will notice the base of the flower pot is drawn in blue. This is how you know which part of the flower pot you should be drawing in the current step.

Step 1: Draw the Flower Pot Rim
The first step is to draw a rim for your flower pot. You can do this by starting with a rounded rectangle. Be sure to leave enough space above and below your rectangle. You will be drawing the stem and flower above this rectangle and the base of your pot below it.
Step 2: Draw the Base of Your Flower Pot
Second, you will draw the base of your flower pot below the rounded rectangle you just drew. The base will be a little over twice the height of the rim of your flower pot.
Step 3: Draw Ribbed Texture on Your Flower Pot
Third, you will draw two lines that will become the ribbing of your flower pot. This will help add interest to your drawing and make it look fancy.
Step 4: Draw the Base of Your Flower Head
The fourth step is to draw the base of your flower head. This will be a simple circle above your flower pot. You will want to make this circle slightly off-center.
Fun Fact: The center of a sunflower is called the 'disk floret'.
Step 5: Draw the Flower Petals
The fifth step is a favorite of many-the flower petals! You are now going to draw some big fluffy and beautiful flower petals around the base you just made. Once you are finished, your flower should look like the one shown above.
Step 6: Draw Lines on Each Flower Petal
Now you will want to draw five lines on each flower petal. Start your lines out thick and taper them off to a point as you move away from the head of your flower.
Step 7: Create the Stem of Your Flower
It is now time to attach a stem to your floating flower. No spooky ghost flowers around here! To make your stem, simply draw two curved lines from the bottom of your flower to your flower pot.
Step 8: Draw Your Leaves
For step 8, give your flower stem some love by adding two leaves to each side. For a natural-looking flower, draw one of the leaves larger than the other.
Step 9: Draw a Line on Each of Your Leaves
Add some detail to the two leaves you just drew by drawing one line on each leaf. Just like you did with the lines on your flower petals, add varying thickness to these lines. Start out your line thin, gradually thicken the line in the middle, and then taper off at the end.
Step 10: Enjoy Your Line Drawing of a Flower
You did it! You now have a beautiful drawing of a flower. If you want to spruce it up a bit more, check out the next step.
Optional Step 11: Color Your Flower Drawing In
You can now add some color to your new flower drawing. If you aren't sure what colors you want to use, refer to the drawing above for inspiration. Whichever colors you choose, your flower will surely look beautiful!

Learn How to Draw and Paint Fancy Flowers Step-by-Step
Looking to advance your flower drawing skills further? If so, I highly recommend picking up the book 'The Joy of Botanical Drawing' by Wendy Hollender. It's amazing!
The art style of this book is a little different from the flower drawing you just did. Instead of a cartoon flower appearance, you will learn how to draw more realistic flowers instead.
The supplies required to do this book's art is a little more involved but very much worth it.
Not only will you learn how to draw flowers, but you will also get drawing and painting tutorials for leaves and fruit. I have to say, the colors in this book fill me up with so much inspiration. I know you will love it as much as I do. 🙂
